BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. — Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a high school senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenage son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

Yup ... he is a politician alright and this paragraph at the end of that article proves it. Deny deny deny ...

It may not be relevant to his campaign but is relevant to his character ... which depending on how you look at , could make it relevant here as well. The voters will let you know in November I guess.

The Washington Post can’t be bothered to worry about Barack Obama’s college years, college transcripts, communist friends, cocaine use, or cop-killing plotters in whose living room he first launched his major political career, but they can get in the really way back machine to 1965 and Mitt Romney’s high school years.

 

It's funny there really isn't a denial, just a memory problem.
Seem exaggerated! NO DENIAL! The key word in the release from his spokeswoman, "SEEM".
"Governor Romney has no memory of participating in these incidents". Still no denial.
Apparently, Romney loves a mob mentality, and hasn't the guts to carry out even bullying tactics and assault without enlisting a group of goons to back him up. Can we say coward as well?
If something so simple as a hair style offends him to the point where he'll use assault and a mob on an individual, what will happen with serious issues, both in America and abroad, when he has an entire military machine behind him.
Build your bomb shelters.
Buy your guns.
Lock up your children.
Your going to need them if Romney gets in.

Notice that the only person who claims not to have remembered this is the person who lead the group. Romney is either lying, or he did this kind of thing so frequently, that if faded into his memory.

This is a legitimate campaign issue because a tendency toward bully behavior never really goes away. This fits what Romney said about himself when he said that he enjoys firing people, and when he said that he does not care about the very poor.

I think it showed strong leadership with a take charge attitude.

Hell, he was the one giving the guy a free haircut...shows generosity.

Helping the guy fit in with the others....and working with a team to do it.

How can we not love the guy as our next President...!!!

You know DL, these "hair cutting" incidents were more common back then and nobody thought much of it. You didn't have to be gay to be a victim either. Things were different back then.

I really don't think Obama would have had much of a chance at the White House back in 1965 either. That was normal back then as well.

 

Gosh I was in HS in 1965 and I remember getting a haircut....

Does Romney have a memory problem?

 

I think Romney's problem is with honesty. He thought that by pretending to forget this incident he could diminish its importance.

 

The thing I find interesting is his tendency to laugh this stuff off. In fact, he does that nervous laugh thing every time someone asks him about things he doesn't want to talk about. But he's the only one laughing, and it just comes across as awkward and out of place.

 

When all else fails in politics, you default to the Nixon defense. "I have no clear recollection of that." It's on, like, Page 1 of the standard play book. And smile and laugh as if you can't believe people are wasting your time with this trivia.

 

The Republican Hate Machine is trying to put a spin on this, saying that the family of the victim is angry at The Washington Post for publishing the story.

The victim is no longer alive.

 

1. It was high school and people Do change
2. Cant stand the Democrats as well as Republicans

3. I weep for this nation no matter which of these 2 asshats gets elected.

 

That puts a new spin on the saying "a bad haircut never killed anyone".

 

Investigative reporters are probably looking for people who remember Mitt Romney as a teenager. If there are other stories like this in Romney's past you can bet we will be reading about them. Someone who does something this vicious is unlikely to have done so only once. It was probably a habit of his.
